Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is in Greek called altaea, dendromoloha or neromoloha. The generic name althaea is derived from the ancient Greek verb alto (to cure). Roots and leaves are used medicinally. Leaves are collected during the summertime and roots in the end of autumn. Root has got emollient, diuretic and vulnerary actions and leaves are expectorant. Root is used for digestive disorders, for mouth inflammations, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, gastritis and duodenal ulcer. Leaves and flowers can also be used in the respiratory system as they soothe or heal bronchus problems, such as bronchitis and irritant cough. Marshmallow shows anti-inflammatory activities, especially in case of mucous membrane irritations. For external use, a poultice can be used for varicosity, ulcers, abscesses and furuncles.
