Hydrastis canadensis root Goldenseal Υδραστις


Also known as yellow root and goldenseal, the Hydrastis canadensis is a native of North America. It is best known for its immunostimulant, hepatic, cholagogue, bitter, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-bacterial properties.

Primarily the root is used and sometimes new leaves as well. It has been used in traditional medicine as a disinfectant as it contains broad-spectrum anti-bacterial and anti-viral compounds – hydrastine and barberine - that can fight effectively most infections. Hence, it is prescribed for upper respiratory infection, sinus infections, mouth ulcers, sore throat, wounds, cuts, skin infections and eye infections.

The Hydrastis canadensis root is also a biter which improve digestion by stimulating the bile especially in cases where damage has been created by colitis or peptic ulcers. It is also an effective remedy for diarrhoea triggered by parasites and infection.

It is also applied to small injuries and skin irritations as an antiseptic where it is used as a poultice. For mouth ulcers and infections it can applied directly.

The Hydrastis canadensis root is contraindicated for use by lactating and/ or pregnant women, people with high blood pressure, or those who suffer from chronic heartburn.
