Equisetum arvense, Horsetail, Εκουιζέτο


The Equisetum arvense or as it is commonly known, the horsetail or mare’s tail is a native of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. It is best known for its tonic, styptic, refrigerant, diuretic, astringent and antiscorbutic properties.

A rich source of calcium, silicon and potassium it used in traditional medicine for treating rheumatism, gout, urinary tract infections and kidney problems. It is used to flush out toxins and bacteria from the kidney and urinary tract without negatively affecting the delicate balance of electrolytes in the body.

The Equisetum arvense is sometimes combined with other herbs to enhance its potency such as with marshmallow root and Oregon grape root to treat and maintain a healthy urinary system; with nettle for enhancing and sustaining the health of bones. 

It is also very effective in treating a number of skin disorders caused by bacterial infection.

It is important to note that the horsetail herb is an effective diuretic and hence, adequate water may be taken during treatment with this herb. It is contraindicated for people suffering from kidney stones or pregnant women. It is also not recommended for people suffering from high blood pressure.
