Angelica Archangelica, root, Dong Quai, Αγγελική ρίζα
Angelica archangelica is a native herb of Syria, which gradually spread all over Europe. It loves cold climates hence you will find it abundantly in Scotland, Iceland and Lapland. It is also known as the Chinese Angelica or Dong Quai.
This herb has been used by the Chinese for more than 2,000 years to enhance libido in women and regulate the menstrual cycle. It is also known to reduce the intensity and occurrence of hot flashes during the onset of menopause.
This is one of the most popular medicinal herbs owing to its strengthening properties. It is used as a tonic for the spleen, kidney, liver, lung and heart as well as a blood purifier and tonic.
Angelica archangelica is also used extensively for treating urinary infection, rheumatism, colic, wind, pleurisy, coughs and colds. It is also recommended for treatment of fever as it acts as a diaphoretic.
It is not indicated for diabetics and pregnant women.
A number of recent studies carried out in China indicate that Angelica archangelica taken immediately following a stroke can decrease significantly the extent of brain damage. It is also sometimes prescribed as a laxative, and remedy for migraines.
