Black Cohosh is a native of North America highly revered for its medicinal properties. It has anti-inflammatory, sedative and analgesic properties and it is also known to help regulate the symptoms caused by the menopause. It is a popular antidote for the bite of the rattlesnake. 

The Black Cohosh root is known for its expectorant, alterative, diuretic, emmenagogue and astringent properties.  It is also used to treat diarrhoea in children, reducing heart palpitation and promoting elimination of toxins through excessive sweating.

Its medicinal properties were recognised and used by Native Americans hundreds of years ago especially for gynaecological problems, depression, kidney disease and sore throat. It is also known to be very effective in treating a number of nervous disorders and rheumatism.

During the middle Ages, Black Cohosh root was used to ameliorate birth pains, counter sterility and increase the flow of breast milk. It was administered for treatment of dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and endometritis.

In today’s age Black Cohosh root is recommended as a dietary supplement to counter premenstrual tension, ease off symptoms of menopause and a number of other gynaecological problems.

The decoction of this root is very effective in treating rheumatism and whooping cough.
