Also known as the Pink Rock Rose or Hoary Rock Rose, the Cistus Creticus is a native of Eastern USA.
It has been used as a remedy for a number of ailments that arise from a scrofulous condition such as diarrhoea, ulcerations, secondary syphilis, ophtalmia among others. Studies show that the oil extract from Cistus Creticus may be helpful in treating certain cancers. It has also been recommended as treatment for acute dysentery and chronic diarrhoea.
Applied externally, it is known to be effective in treating scrofulous ulcers and tumours; as a gargle, it is used for scarlatina and as a wash for prurigo. The Cistrose flowers are also used for treating colds and coughs as it is an effective emmenagogue and mucous membrane stimulant. The Cistus Creticus is also a recommended remedy for anxiety, fear pangs and panic.
Since it is a source of gum resin ladanum it is often used in the perfumery industry as a substitute to ambergris.
