Cimicifuga racemosa root - Black Cohosh

Cimicifuga racemosa also known as the Black Cohosh is a native of North America. It is known for its estrogenic, emmenagogue, expectorant, analgesic and diuretic properties. This herb contains isoflavones, a compound which mimics hormones. It is used to treat menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, and depression.

Native Americans used the Black Cohosh to treat a number of ailments such as sore throat, malaria, rheumatism, kidney problems, fever, dropsy, nervous disorders (such as hysteria and depression), lumbago and yellow fever.

Combined with Blue Cohosh it becomes an excellent tonic for women’s reproductive system as the former strengthens the uterus while the Black Cohosh improves oestrogen levels. It is used as a safe and effective alternative to oestrogen replacement therapy (ERT) for women who cannot or would not take ERT for menopause.

The Black Cohosh also known for its mastogenic effects, i.e. it causes natural enlargement of breasts.

Cimicifuga racemosa also calms bad coughs, hence it is recommended at night for people who cough so they can have a peaceful sleep. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties are used for treating rheumatoid arthritis, which is often aggravated by menopausal hormonal imbalances.

It is contraindicated for pregnant women as it can induce labor.
