Cocoa powder, sometimes known as "cocoa solids," is an unsweetened chocolate product obtained by extracting cocoa butter from cacao beans. This method produces a somewhat bitter powder that is high in fiber, antioxidants, and other minerals.
Because the fat from cacao beans is removed to manufacture cocoa powder, it lacks the creamy texture of ordinary chocolate, but it tastes similar to dark chocolate, but not as sweet.
Cocoa, when used in this manner, not only delivers a chocolaty flavor, but may also contribute to a happy mood, boost energy, and improve heart and metabolic health due to its high supply of polyphenols, magnesium, and other nutrients.
Add cacao to nut butter, oatmeal, cookies, bars, granola, cakes, veggie and fruit smoothies, avocado mousse, and energy balls made with nuts and seeds, fudge, chocolate truffles, bread, muffins, hot chocolate or espresso, even marinate for meat. The possibilities are endless.
