MSM Powder (Methylsulfonylmethane)
MSM is an acronym for methylsulfonylmethane. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a lignan-derived organic sulfur compound, has been oxidized to form methylsulfonylmethane.
This organic sulfur-containing molecule can be found in various green vegetables and other foods, as well as in the human body, in many animals, and in milk. It is also a naturally occurring chemical found in water, produced by phytoplankton.
Many of the advantages of MSM supplements are due to physiologically active sulfur, which is the fourth most abundant metal in the human body. Sulfur is essential for a multitude of critical biological functions on a daily basis, and MSM is classified as a sulfur supplement.
Three uses for which MSM has gained the greatest reputation include action as an anti-atherosclerotic (preventing hardening/thickening of the arteries), a chemopreventive compound, and a natural anti-inflammatory. MSM appears to support the body's natural ability to eliminate free radicals, lowering oxidative stress and the problems that come with it.
It works as an anti-inflammatory because it inhibits the generation of pro-inflammatory mediators and suppresses the immune system's damaging signals that can damage the entire body.
Other advantages of MSM include treating osteoarthritis and joint pain, improving digestive issues such as leaky gut syndrome, repairing skin and treating skin problems such as rosacea, allergies, and wounds, lowering muscle pain and spasms, restoring hair growth, and assisting the body in adapting to stress.
◉ The best way to take MSM powder is simply by adding it to water (usually one glass of water for one serving).
◉ For treating osteoarthritis the recommended starting dose is 1gr 2-3 times daily and gradually you can increase it to 3-6 grams daily.
◉ It can also be given to dogs to help reduce joint pain, injuries, and inflammation. The recommended “therapeutic dosage” for dogs is about 50 to 100 mg MSM per 10 pounds of body weight.
BONUS TIP: You’ll get the best results when you use it along with antioxidants/anti-inflammatory compounds, like vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids.
◉ Should be stored in airtight glass containers -in a cool, dark, and dry place- to preserve the flavor, texture, and properties.
◉ Before adding a new herbal remedy or supplement to your daily routine, you should consult with a medical doctor or holistic health practitioner.
