Wild yam, also known as aluka, China root, colic root, devil's bones, shan-yao, yuma, rheumatism root, and red velvet yam, has been used by Native Americans and early Americans for centuries for possible benefits ranging from estrogen therapy and natural progesterone to treating diverticulosis, gallbladder pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and providing increased energy.

Women have even used it to ease colic in newborns and minimize hot flashes. Many people report that it helps to relieve menstruation discomfort and maintain hormonal balance. Anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties are found in wild yam. It may help relieve discomfort produced by stomach cramping surrounding the inflamed region as an antispasmodic.

Wild yam is now thought to aid in the regulation of blood sugar and cholesterol, as well as the prevention of cancer and the treatment of melasma, melanodermatitis, and solar lentigo, all of which lead to hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is a skin disorder that manifests itself as darker spots of skin. It is both harmless and common, but it can be aggravating.

Recommended Dosage
◉ 1-3 teaspoons of loose tea (or 3g up to 3 times) daily. If more than one herbal mixture is consumed at the same period of time, reduce the amount of tea accordingly.
◉ When herbs are used for an extended period of time, it is suggested to consume a herbal remedy with a ratio of 3 to 1. For example:
- If you choose to take it for 3 weeks, have a one-week pause.
- If it is taken for a 30-day period, have a 10-day pause.
That does not apply to herbs and fruits that have a laxative effect.

Notes
◉ Should be stored in airtight glass containers -in a cool, dark, and dry place- to preserve the flavor, texture, and properties.
◉ Before adding a new herbal remedy or supplement to your daily routine, you should consult with a medical doctor or holistic health practitioner.
