Mentha pulegium is a flowering plant in the mint family that is native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It is also known as pennyroyal, pennyrile, mosquito plant, and pudding grass.

Crushed pennyroyal leaves emit a very strong fragrance similar to spearmint.

Pennyroyal has historically been used to treat colds, fevers, coughs, stomach pains, liver, and kidney issues, and headaches. It was also helpful against influenza, and illnesses such as smallpox and tuberculosis.

Ground leaves are applied to bug bites to relieve irritation and itching. Because of its strong odor, pennyroyal can work as an insect repellent, repelling fleas, parasites, ants, and mice. A few dried leaves on the pillow or in the pet basket can repel insects.

A tea concentrate is recommended for external applications such as gargles, compresses, and baths. The herb extract can be used to clean infected wounds. The herb poultice aids in the treatment of bruises. It is beneficial for respiratory disorders when gargled.

Of course, using it as a tea means you can also drink it, with Pennyroyal historically flavoring herbal drinks as well as meals.

CAUTION
🡆
It is not recommended to take pennyroyal in big amounts or for long periods of time since excessive or concentrated dosages might be harmful.
🡆Avoid applying pennyroyal oil straight to your skin.

Recommended Dosage
◉ 1-3 teaspoons of loose tea (or 3g up to 3 times) daily. If more than one herbal mixture is consumed at the same period of time, reduce the amount of tea accordingly.
◉ When herbs are used for an extended period of time, it is suggested to consume a herbal remedy with a ratio of 3 to 1. For example:
- If you choose to take it for 3 weeks, have a one-week pause.
- If it is taken for a 30-day period, have a 10-day pause.
That does not apply to herbs and fruits that have a laxative effect.

Notes
◉ Should be stored in airtight glass containers -in a cool, dark, and dry place- to preserve the flavor, texture, and properties.
◉ Before adding a new herbal remedy or supplement to your daily routine, you should consult with a medical doctor or holistic health practitioner.
