Also known as Gurmar, Gymnema Sylvestre is native to India. The translation of its name is literally, “destroyer of sugar” because after chewing on the leaves of this plant, one cannot taste sweet and also because it increases insulin levels. This medicinal plant has been used in Ayurvedic medical treatment for more than 2,000 years.

It is recognized medically for its refrigerant, astringent, and appetite depressant properties besides its ability to regulate blood sugar. It contains gymnemic acids, compounds that slow down the absorption of glucose from the intestines into the bloodstream.  Some studies have shown that Gymnema Sylvestre can help regenerate the pancreas cells, which produce insulin.

The plant has been used for treating type-2 diabetes as it has the capacity to lower blood sugar for those who are hyperglycaemic. It is also used for treating fever, and upper respiratory infection, and regulating cholesterol and triglycerides levels.

Taken over prolonged periods, Gymnema Sylvestre can keep you away from sugary foods and hence, help you commit to balanced eating plans. As an appetite depressant, it helps keep overeating tendencies in check and is hence an acclaimed weight loss aid.

Recommended Dosage
◉ 1-3 teaspoons of loose tea (or 3g up to 3 times) daily. If more than one herbal mixture is consumed at the same period of time, reduce the amount of tea accordingly.
◉ When herbs are used for an extended period of time, it is suggested to consume a herbal remedy with a ratio of 3 to 1. For example:
- If you choose to take it for 3 weeks, have a one-week pause.
- If it is taken for a 30-day period, have a 10-day pause.
That does not apply to herbs and fruits that have a laxative effect.

Notes
◉ Should be stored in airtight glass containers -in a cool, dark, and dry place- to preserve the flavor, texture, and properties.
◉ Before adding a new herbal remedy or supplement to your daily routine, you should consult with a medical doctor or holistic health practitioner.
