Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) | Our Biodynamic Cultivation
The Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) also known as milfoil, bloodwort, and arrowroot among others is a native herb of North America, Asia, and Europe.
In ancient times it was also called “herbal militaris” for its remarkable ability to staunch the blood flow of wounds. Legend has it that Achilles used the herb to stop the bleeding of his soldiers on the battlefields and hence, the name. Administered in the form of tea (strong) it can help with internal bleeding as well. It stops bleeding, and reduces inflammation and pain for piles.
Yarrow tea is used as a remedy for cold and fever. The tea also treats obstructed perspiration as it opens the pores and purifies the blood. It is also beneficial in eruptive diseases such as measles.
It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties hence, it’s effective in treating cuts, wounds, and even burns. Taken internally, the Achillea millefolium counters spasms and cramps of the stomach and uterus. It also strengthens the liver and gall bladder and improves digestion.
Its diuretic and anti-inflammatory traits heal the urinary infection. It is also highly effective in reducing menstrual pain and excessive bleeding. It is used sometimes to delay the onset of the periods.
Washing hair with Achillea millefolium is known to prevent baldness; however, it should not be used over a prolonged period as it might cause skin sensitivity to sunlight.
The essential oil of the yarrow is used to kill mosquito larvae. It is an excellent insect repellent.
Recommended Dosage
◉ 1-3 teaspoons of loose tea (or 3g up to 3 times) daily. If more than one herbal mixture is consumed at the same period of time, reduce the amount of tea accordingly.
◉ When herbs are used for an extended period of time, it is suggested to consume a herbal remedy with a ratio of 3 to 1. For example:
- If you choose to take it for 3 weeks, have a one-week pause.
- If it is taken for a 30-day period, have a 10-day pause.
That does not apply to herbs and fruits that have a laxative effect.
Notes
◉ Should be stored in airtight glass containers -in a cool, dark, and dry place- to preserve the flavor, texture, and properties.
◉ Before adding a new herbal remedy or supplement to your daily routine, you should consult with a medical doctor or holistic health practitioner.
