Cretan Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) | Organic


The Lemon balm is a native of the Mediterranean region, France, and central and eastern regions of the USA. The herb has been used for more than 2,000 years as a revitalizer, which also earned it the nickname “the elixir of life”. It’s been prescribed by doctors since the Middle Ages as a natural remedy to improve sleep, reduce anxiety, heal wounds and promote longevity.

Besides being an excellent revitalizer, the tea of Lemon balm is excellent for colds and fever, and most viral infections. It will help with cold sores and helps prevent mumps and shingles.

It is a well-recognized heart tonic, that improves blood circulation, lowers high blood pressure, and reduces heart palpitations. It is also beneficial for insect bites and light wounds.

Highly acclaimed as a sedative, the Lemon balm combined with valerian can be as good if not better than any sleeping aid prescription. It is very effective at calming nerves and its analgesic properties make it good for treating menstrual cramps, heart spasms, nervous stomach, and colic pains. It is safe and hence, it can be safely administered to children and infants.

The herb is also effective in the treatment of Grave’s disease as has the ability to inhibit the hormones that stimulate the thyroid gland. Lemon balm is also helpful for treating migraine, depression, anxiety, shock, nervous tension, and vertigo.

Recommended Dosage
◉ 1-3 teaspoons of loose tea (or 3g up to 3 times) daily. If more than one herbal mixture is consumed at the same period of time, reduce the amount of tea accordingly.
◉ When herbs are used for an extended period of time, it is suggested to consume a herbal remedy with a ratio of 3 to 1. For example:
- If you choose to take it for 3 weeks, have a one-week pause.
- If it is taken for a 30-day period, have a 10-day pause.
That does not apply to herbs and fruits that have a laxative effect.

◉ Should be stored in airtight glass containers -in a cool, dark, and dry place- to preserve the flavor, texture, and properties.

Herbal Tea Brewing Instructions

  1. Heat the water to just the point when it starts to boil.
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of loose tea, to a tea infuser or tea bag, for every 180ml - 240ml of water.
  3. Pour the heated water (right off the boil) over the tea, cover your cup, and steep for 7-10 minutes or longer.
  4. Add honey or stevia for sweetness, if desired.
