Milkvetch Root (Astragalus)
Also known as the goat’s thorn, the Astracantha is a native of the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The herb is used to make natural gum, “tragacanth”.
The Astracantha root has been used for a very long time as a medicine, with a mention of it found in several Chinese and Persian medicinal recipes. In China, it is used to increase the strength of “Qi”, which in turn promotes the growth of tissue and discharge of pus from infected areas of the body. In India, it is used as an aphrodisiac.
Owing to its diuretic and demulcent properties the dried root has been used for treating dropsy. The treatment is highly beneficial especially when this condition is complicated by hepatic obstruction.
Modern science is working at extracting telomerase activators from the Astracantha root. This is an enzyme that promotes the replacement of telomeres (short bits of DNA), which are critical in cancer treatment.
Another important compound is the TAT2 (cycloastragenol), which promises to be able to fight HIV and other serious infections as well as symptoms of aging.
A number of research studies point to the ability of the Astracantha root extract to fight cancer and improve the functioning of the liver, heart, and immune system.
◉ 1-3 teaspoons of loose tea (or 3g up to 3 times) daily. If more than one herbal mixture is consumed at the same period of time, reduce the amount of tea accordingly.
◉ When herbs are used for an extended period of time, it is suggested to consume a herbal remedy with a ratio of 3 to 1. For example:
- If you choose to take it for 3 weeks, have a one-week pause.
- If it is taken for a 30-day period, have a 10-day pause.
That does not apply to herbs and fruits that have a laxative effect.

Herbal Tea Brewing Instructions
- Heat the water to just the point when it starts to boil.
- Add 1 teaspoon of loose tea, to a tea infuser or tea bag, for every 180ml - 240ml of water.
- Pour the heated water (right off the boil) over the tea, cover your cup, and steep for 7-10 minutes or longer.
- Add honey or stevia for sweetness, if desired.
